I just don't agree. I mean sure, the few millimeters will have some effect on pitch, but nothing you can't compensate for with a tuning slide. Certainly won't make the whole horn 'wonky.' As for the step down.is it really a bad thing?
I mean trumpet players these days are having techs CREATE different steps and gaps to slightly improve response, create resistance, or whatever. The new hotshot Adams euphs are designed with an 'adjustable gap receiver' for exactly this reason.
It's not that the step makes NO difference, just that it's a pretty minor tweak that a high schooler likely won't even notice, and may even be beneficial. You're correct about those gaps. On instruments designed to have them.No really, I've known of trumpet players that have had techs unsolder and resolder a mpc receiver on their instrument to create a step/gap, or adjust a gap. Not part of the original instrument design. Why mess with it?
Baritone Mouthpiece Sizes
Just use the correct shank mouthpiece.Because using an adapter is not a big deal, and not everyone can afford to buy multiple mouthpieces. Remember that some kids play low brass because their parents can't afford an instrument, and schools typically own the tubas and euphs, so that's what they play.
The adapter will add a good inch or so to the length of the instrument. It will also change the bore size going into the instrument (obviously, that is the whole point of them). Instrumwnts (especially better models) are designed incredibly specifically. If you change the bore size and it becomes inconsistent then the waves (sound) will end up reverberating in a weird manner and the tone won't be as characteristic. By changing the length of the instrument you are completely messing up the tunning of the instrument, which you could work around but will force you to do funky stuff with your embouchure. Now, this is really only that big of a problem in professional model instruments, but it can still affect the lower quality horns and it is best to learn on as ideal a set up as possible. I don't think you're quite right about these things; I'll explainThe adapter will add a good inch or so to the length of the instrument. The adapters I have seen and tried are made to fit over the existing small-shank mouthpiece.
While they do add length, it is a couple millimeters, not anywhere near an inch, and thus will have a negligible effect on pitch. It will also change the bore size going into the instrument (obviously, that is the whole point of them). This isn't quite right. (outer diameter) is certainly be changed, as designed, but I.D.
(inner diameter, or 'bore') of the mpc isn't changed by the adapter. However, the adapter does create a small 'step' at the end of the shank. That is, the mpc bore doesn't meet smoothly inside the lead pipe, as it does without the adapter.
Adams euphoniums are designed to make this 'step' adjustable to players' preferences.
